What it is and what moves it

West Texas Intermediate is the main US crude oil benchmark. Crude is refined into petrol, diesel, jet fuel and the raw materials for plastics.

What tends to move the price

  • OPEC and its allies, which agree how much oil to pump.
  • Global demand, which rises and falls with travel, shipping and factory output.
  • US stockpiles and shale output, reported each week.

Oil prices come down to how much the big producers choose to pump against how much the world is using.
