What it is and what moves it

This is raw cane sugar, the world benchmark. Brazil, India and Thailand are major producers, and Brazil also turns cane into ethanol fuel.

What tends to move the price

  • Brazil's harvest, and how much cane mills there turn into ethanol instead of sugar.
  • India's export rules, which change with its own crop.
  • Monsoon rains in South and Southeast Asia.

Sugar depends on a few big growers and on whether Brazil would rather make fuel from its cane.
