What it is and what moves it

This is the US benchmark price at Henry Hub, Louisiana. Gas heats homes and generates electricity, and it is shipped abroad as liquefied natural gas (LNG).

What tends to move the price

  • Weather: cold winters and hot summers raise demand for heating and air conditioning.
  • Storage levels, reported each week against the usual for the season.
  • LNG exports, which link US gas to prices in Europe and Asia.

US gas is one of the jumpiest prices in markets, because the weather can change demand within days.
