What it is and what moves it

Cocoa beans are ground into chocolate. Most of the world's cocoa comes from Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana in West Africa.

What tends to move the price

  • Weather and crop disease in West Africa.
  • Government-set prices and export rules in Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana.
  • Chocolate demand, which tends to slow when prices climb.

With most of the world's cocoa grown in two countries, one bad season there can move the price a long way.
