What it is and what moves it
This contract is for arabica beans, the variety in most specialty and café coffee. Brazil grows the most arabica, followed by Colombia.
What tends to move the price
- Weather in Brazil, where frost or drought can cut a crop.
- Stockpiles held in exchange warehouses.
- The Brazilian real: a weaker real makes growers there keener to sell.
Coffee prices hang on the weather in Brazil more than anywhere else.
