What it is and what moves it

Silver is half precious metal, half industrial metal. It goes into solar panels, electronics and jewellery, and investors hold it in coins and bars.

What tends to move the price

  • Gold: silver often moves with gold, but usually by more in both directions.
  • Factory demand: solar and electronics output matter more for silver than for gold.
  • Mine supply: most silver is dug up as a by-product of copper, lead and zinc mines, so supply doesn't respond quickly to price.

Silver tends to follow gold with bigger swings, because it depends on factories as well as fear.
