What it is and what moves it

Aluminium is light and doesn't rust. It goes into cans, cars, aircraft, window frames and power lines.

What tends to move the price

  • Electricity prices: smelting aluminium uses a great deal of power, so energy costs set much of its cost.
  • Chinese output, which makes up most of the world's supply.
  • Tariffs and trade rules, which can split prices between regions.

Aluminium is close to solid electricity: when power gets dearer, so does making it.
