What it is and what moves it
Copper carries electricity. It goes into wiring, power grids, buildings, motors and electric cars, and China is by far the biggest user.
What tends to move the price
- Building and factory activity, especially in China.
- Grids and electric cars, which need much more copper than what they replace.
- Mine disruptions: new mines take many years to open, so supply is slow to catch up.
Copper is used in so much building and wiring that its price is often read as a gauge of the world economy.
