What it is and what moves it
Platinum's biggest use is in catalytic converters that clean exhaust from diesel engines. It also goes into jewellery, glassmaking and chemical plants.
What tends to move the price
- Car production, especially diesel and hybrid vehicles.
- Supply from a few countries: most mined platinum comes from South Africa, so power cuts and strikes there matter.
- Swapping with palladium: carmakers move between the two when one gets much dearer.
Platinum is mostly a bet on car factories and on mines in one country.
