What it is and what moves it

Gold is bought for jewellery, held by central banks as a reserve, and owned by investors as a store of value. Industry uses only a little of it, mostly in electronics.

What tends to move the price

  • Real interest rates: gold pays no interest, so it tends to look less attractive when inflation-adjusted bond yields rise.
  • The US dollar: gold is priced in dollars, so a weaker dollar often lifts it.
  • Fear and central bank buying: demand tends to rise when markets are worried or reserve managers add to their holdings.

Gold doesn't earn anything, so its price is mostly about what people fear and what holding cash or bonds pays instead.
