Each sector's return is cap-weighted using its companies' size at the start of the period: today's market cap over one plus the return, assuming a constant share count. Weighting by today's cap would flatter past winners. Up counts companies with a positive return. P/E and forward P/E are medians; loss-makers have no P/E and forward P/E rests on analyst forecasts. Real estate has neither, because a REIT's earnings carry property revaluations.

A big company moves its sector more than a small one, so a sector can rise while most of its companies fall. Compare the return with how many companies are up.
